PRINCIPAL CONDUCTOR  指揮

Kemuel Wong  黃國豐

Kemuel Wong

Kemuel Wong was born in Hong Kong and raised in Vancouver. He loved music from an early age, pursuing piano studies and sang in the Vancouver Chinese Children’s Choir. Kemuel began to take an interest in conducting during his secondary school years at Vancouver Technical Secondary School.  Kemuel’s band and string orchestra teachers mentored him and provided opportunities to conduct at school concerts. Following secondary school, Kemuel went on to study music at the University of British Columbia, graduating with a Bachelor of Music in General Studies: Secondary Education and a Master of Music in Choral Conducting.

Kemuel has studied conducting with Bruce Dunn, John van Deursen, Wayne Toews, the late professor Morihiro Okabe, Kenneth Hsieh, Bruce Pullan C.M., and Dr. Graeme Langager. He has participated in several conducting workshops and master classes in Canada, United States, and Germany led by Kenneth Woods, David Hoose, Christopher Zimmerman, Vance George, Noel Edison, and Christopher Cock.

In September 2015, Kemuel made his conducting debut in his birth city of Hong Kong as a Guest Conductor with the Hong Kong Oratorio Society and Hong Kong Strings, sharing the stage with HKOS Music Director, Professor Chan Wing-wah in a performance of music by J.S. Bach. Kemuel conducted his first international tour with the VOS in April 2016, performing at 7 churches throughout Taiwan, in the cities of Taipei, Taoyuan, Keelung, Hualien, and Tainan.

Kemuel is currently the Principal Conductor of Vancouver Oratorio Society, Conductor of the VOS Chamber Singers,  Music Director for the Folsom Singers, Happy Melody Singing Group, and  Artist-in-Residence at St. Patrick’s Regional Secondary School.

Kemuel gives back to the music community as the Past-President of the 111-year-old Vancouver Women’s Musical Society, where scholarships and bursaries are awarded each year to young and talented BC musicians to advance their music education and careers to national and international stages.

黃國豐 

黃國豐在香港出生,成長於溫哥華。他從小就熱愛音樂,學習鋼琴,並參與溫哥華兒童合唱團。他於中學期間已開始對指揮發生濃厚興趣,在樂隊及弦樂團各老師的悉心指導下,他多次在學校的音樂會擔任指揮。其後繼續深造於「卑詩大學」,取得音樂學士及合唱指揮的音樂碩士。修讀指揮學期間,他師從多位名教授和音樂家,其中包括 Bruce Dunn、John van Deursen、Wayne Toews、Morihiro Okabe、Kenneth Hsieh、Bruce Pullan,和 Dr. Graeme Langager 等。 他亦曾參與在加拿大、美國和德國舉辦的指揮講習研討會和大師指揮班;分別由 Kenneth  Woods、David  Hoose、Christopher Zimmerman、Vance George、Noel Edison及Christopher Cock 等著名大師教導。

二零一五年九月,黃國豐應香港聖樂團音樂總監陳永華教授邀請在他出生的城市 – 香港,作客席指揮,與陳教授同台,指揮香港聖樂團及香港弦樂團的巴赫音樂會,這也是他在香港首次擔任指揮的演出。二零一六年四月,黃國豐連同溫哥華聖樂團至台灣作他首次國際巡迴演出,與台北,桃園,基隆,花蓮和台南等城市的不同教會合辦七場音樂會。

黃國豐現任溫哥華聖樂團首席指揮、溫哥華聖樂團青年聖樂小組指揮、美聲歌者音樂總監及聖帕特里克地區中學駐校藝術家。除了擔任指揮工作之外,他亦是前任溫哥婦女音樂協會總裁,該協會有111年歷史,每年都頒發獎學金和助學金給BC省年輕有為的音樂家以推動他們的音樂水平可以達到國家和國際舞台的水準。

Cecilia Chueh  陳慧中

Cecilia

Born in Taipei, Cecilia’s early musical experience started at age 6 as a chorister of Glory Star Children’s choir, the first children’s choir in Taiwan.  At Chinese Cultural University, she majored in vocal music, studying conducting with Maestro Robert Procter.  She has taught at Sacred Heart Girls High School and Christ College in Taipei, Taiwan, and was also busily involved with the Taipei Deaf Drama Troupe and the Sign Language Club as their music coach.

After immigrated to Vancouver, Cecilia has been involved in several local community choirs and church choirs.  As a devoted volunteer, she has been instrumental in introducing Taiwanese music to the Canadian society and promoting active cross-cultural exchange programs.  She has initiated what has now evolved to be known as the Taiwanese Cultural Festival.  To show her concern for the motherland, Taiwan, Cecilia founded the Egret Ladies Choir in 1996, to introduce traditional Taiwanese folk songs as well as brilliant works by contemporary Taiwanese composers.  In 1999 Cecilia established Egret Music Centre as a resource centre for Taiwanese music in Vancouver for the purpose of encouraging the exchange and cooperation between Canadians and Taiwanese.

Cecilia received the Living Heritage Award of the 2002 ExplorAsian Heritage Award, which was granted by the Vancouver Asian Heritage Month Society.  Egret Music Centre was also very proud to be awarded the “2002 Achievement on Social Education Promotion” from the Ministry of Education of Taiwan.  It is the only overseas group to enjoy such an honor.

 

陳慧中

陳慧中出生於台北。在台曾任聖心女中音樂教師與關渡基督書院聲樂教師。僑居溫哥華後,曾任溫哥華遠道合唱團、閩南堂以及溫哥華台灣基督教會聖歌隊指揮,也參與溫哥華聖樂團的創立。在溫哥華東寧書院義務負責1990年起「台灣作曲家樂展」及後來與台加文化協會合辦,更名為「台灣文化節」之執行策劃至1997年,當年並獲邀擔任加拿大亞太年文化活動顧問。

1996年創立白鷺鷥合唱團並擔任指揮,1999年進一步成立白鷺鷥音樂中心,積極擔任台灣與加拿大合唱與音樂界之橋樑,並與加拿大音樂中心合作,共同推動各種促進雙方音樂交流與合作機會。因其長年對音樂文化交流的推動獲各界肯定,1996年同時獲 VANCOUVER SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA 與台加文化協會頒贈榮譽會員,2002年經提名榮獲溫哥華首屆亞太文化薪傳奬。白鷺鷥音樂中心也獲台灣教育部評選為2002年推展社會教育有功團體,是唯一獲選的海外團體。

 


ASSOCIATE CONDUCTOR 副指揮

Neville To  涂道揚

Neville is  a founding member of Vancouver Oratorio Society since 1991,  has served as their Choir Master for more than 15 years before being appointed as their Associate Conductor in July, 2018.  His interest in singing began at an early age when he joined the youth choir at church.  In the early 1980’s, Neville had the opportunity of taking voice training with the late Mr. Frank Huang, the founding conductor of VOS, who inspired him to develop a great interest and passion in oratorios, choral singing and conducting.

On a number of occasions, Neville has performed as a baritone soloist in VOS concerts. He enjoys performing with VOS (especially in their tour concerts to LA, Calgary, Edmonton, Seattle, Toronto and Taiwan) and conducting at church. When needed, he has served as conductor in VOS small group presentations.

At present, Neville is a member of “The Gospellers” – a quartet which has been invited to present and share traditional sacred music in different church fellowships and worships. The group has produced  two CD of favorite sacred selections.

Susan Chan  陳李佩娟

Susan Chan 2022

Susan Chan is a piano teacher and a researcher based in the Greater Vancouver area. She has been teaching piano for approximately 30 years. At the early age of 4, she began learning music, and has managed to acquire a Bachelor’s, Master’s, as well as a PhD in Music.

With years of experience, Susan is known to be a teacher with good patience and get along with children easily while teaching. Aside from teaching piano, she also teaches flute, music theory, music history, and other related subjects.

In her free time, she also accompanies and directs a choir of her own, occasionally performing in a local church. Today, she is still active in the music field, teaching students, performing, and accompanying other musicians and choirs.

Susan is currently the Accompanist of Vancouver Oratorio Society. She has been serving with Vancouver Oratorio Society since 2017.
